White Shetland Sliver (Roving) Remnant

A bit over six-tenths of an ounce of hand-combed white Shetland wool sliver (combed roving or "top") from our ewe Deb. Some bits of light grey. For custom spinning. A remnant, so perfect for trying a new fiber.

Shetland is consider a "fine wool" with a moderate staple (fiber length) and narrow (soft) fiber. It can be used for items to be worn against the skin and for fine dress worteds. Worsted wool is a fine combed wool where the fiber is tightly spun and therefore more durable than woolens. Working with sliver is like working with drum-carded roving. You can produce either a true worsted wool yarn from this sliver or a semi-worsted (ask for details). Sliver can also be used with a hackle for blending (say a Shetland/Angora blend).

You can generally buy the fiber as-is or have it dyed/spun to suit. Dying can be done with commercial fast-wash acid dyes ("Commercial Dye") or with natural/plant dyes ("Natural Dye"). Natural dyes are subject to availability and the colors will vary from batch to batch. "Our Choice" under natural dyes means we select the best of what we have currently available to get close to your color preference (and will discuss the options with you). True blues and reds are difficult to obtain (and may be expensive). Most plant-greens have some yellow. Color/light fastness will be better with commercial dyes, but plant dyes are rustic, traditional, and sustainable alternatives.

Please specify the weight of yarn you need for your project (e.g. sock, sport, worsted). If you need help figuring out a knitting gauge, approximate amounts for particular projects, please ask.
